Why do I need wedges?

The design of today's clipless pedal systems does not allow adjustment of the angle between the cycle shoe/foot and the pedal platform. Therefore. the sole of the cycling shoe is always kept parallel to the pedal axle.

96% of the population exhibit a natural physical attribute known as "forefoot tilt".

Forefoot tilt

This means that the front of the foot makes a natural angle or "tilt" when measured relative to the axis of the leg.

Wedges allow this natural tilt to be accommodated at the cycling shoe / pedal interface.

Bike Fit Systems Orthotic Wedges

Bike Fit Systems Wedges Bike Fit Systems (BFS) Orthotic Wedges are a simple and effective solution to the "forefoot tilt" problem experienced by 19 out of 20 cyclists.

The wedges are shims made from tough, non-compressible plastic and are available in a range of angles to correct varying degrees of forefoot tilt. They "cant" the cycling shoe relative to the pedal axle by fitting behind the cleat.

The wedges are available for the following popular cleat designs:-

  • Look Keo / Campagnolo / Shimano SPD -SL
  • Speedplay Road
  • SPD / Time Impact and ATAC

After correctly fitting the wedges, riders will experience the following benefits:-

  • Decreased or eliminated knee pain
  • Improved fit on the bike
  • Increased muscle recruitment and reduced fatigue
  • Improved foot comfort and contact
  • Reduction and possible elimination of lower back pain

Ideally, the use of wedges should be evaluated during a bike fitting session and installed as part of the process as they may effect the optimum saddle position and cleat placement.

BFS Wedges can also be used to correct leg length discrepencies.

Can I buy the wedges without having a bike fitting session?

Wedges are available via mail order. However, the purchaser takes full responsibility for the correct fitment of the wedges. Cyclefit NZ can only advise riders on wedge fitment and usage as part of a bike fit session.
